Blogger.com Probably the easiest to use of all the combination blog update/free hosting sites. One of Blogger’s major pluses is its support for third-party blog sites, meaning you can set up and update a weblog on your own website using Blogger. You are not restricted to using their hosting service.
Livejournal.com : A blog site that offers free hosting and updating of weblogs using the built-in interface. Considerably more community oriented than blogger.com but less flexible. It allows message boards so people can respond to your posts on your blog.
Xanga.com : Free hosting blog site similar to livejournal but with a considerably busier interface and more options. Allows readers of your blog to comment as well as ‘subscribe’ to be informed when you update it.

Social Networking of course is in its infancy, at least to web site traffic generators, so what are the so far under-penetrated benefits of social networking?
Lower Costs
It is significantly cheaper to employ online social networking strategies than to pay for advertising. When you social network, you can prescreen potential customers. You learn what your prospects like and what they don’t. That personal relationship you gain when you connect with your potential customer is more valuable than what you would get had you advertised. Advertising is impersonal: the “one size fits all” concept does not seem to work anymore.
Credibility and Trust
Connecting with prospects on a personal level builds trust and credibility. A general rule of thumb is to offer your services, expertise or help before you ask for it. It is acceptable to promote your services when asked. If you’re not careful, your attempts could be considered spam. Instead, wait for the opportunities to present themselves instead of forcing a situation.
It’s Who You Know
When you socialize, you meet others who know others. How are you going to meet the president of a large corporation? You start by talking to his friends. You ask your associates if they know someone who is connected with him And on and on.
Social networking relationships are supposed to benefit both parties. Never take more than you give. When the opportunity presents itself, don’t be afraid to ask your contact to introduce you to a prospect. The old saying rings true: it’s not what you know; it’s who you know.
There are many reasons to employ social networking as a marketing tactic. Ensure that you have extra time to spend. While it’s true that the upfront costs are less, this method takes up a lot of time in research and building relationships.
Nothing personifies the Internet’s promise of easy and unlimited communication possibilities quite like the humble weblog. Never mind the millions of commercially driven website; what could be more creative than placing your own thoughts, feelings, art, rants, your own… whatever, in front of a potential audience of millions?

A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services.
Social networking has encouraged new ways to communicate and share information. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people.
While it could be said that email and websites have most of the essential elements of social network services, proprietary encapsulated services gained popularity in the first decade of the 21st century.
The main types of social networking services are those which contain category divisions (such as former school-year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with Facebook widely used worldwide; MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn being the most widely used in North America; Nexopia (mostly in Canada); Bebo, Hi5, StudiVZ (mostly in Germany), Decayenne, Tagged, XING; Badoo and Skyrock in parts of Europe; Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America; and Friendster, Mixi, Multiply, Orkut, Wretch, Xiaonei and Cyworld in Asia and the Pacific Islands.
There have been some attempts to standardize these services to avoid the need to duplicate entries of friends and interests (see the FOAF standard and the Open Source Initiative), but this has led to some concerns about privacy.

Blogs, like the ones at HowStuffWorks, are a lot like keeping an online journal.
Blogs appear on the news pretty often these days. For example, a reporter is tipped to a story by a blog, or a blog reports another angle on a story. Blogs show up in magazines a lot, too.
But there is a good chance you have never seen a blog (also known as a weblog) or experienced the blogosphere. What are blogs? There are now millions of them — where did they all come from?
One of the things that is so amazing about blogs is their simplicity.
Think about a “normal Web site.” It usually has a home page, with links to lots of sub-pages that have more detail. HowStuffWorks is like this, with thousands of information pages all organized under a home page. A small business site follows the same format — it might have a home pag¬e and five or 10 sub-pages. Most traditional Web sites follow this format. If the site is small, it is sort of like an online brochure. If it is large, it is like an electronic encyclopedia.
¬ A typical Web site has a home page that links to sub-pages within the site. CNN.com is typical of this genre. The CNN site contains thousands of articles all organized into big categories. The categories and all the latest stories are accessed from the home page.
A blog is much simpler:
• A blog is normally a single page of entries. There may be archives of older entries, but the “main page” of a blog is all anyone really cares about.
• A blog is organized in reverse-chronological order, from most recent entry to least recent.
• A blog is normally public — the whole world can see it.
• The entries in a blog usually come from a single author.
The entries in a blog are usually stream-of-consciousness. There is no particular order to them. For example, if I see a good link, I can throw it in my blog. The tools that most bloggers use make it incredibly easy to add entries to a blog any time they feel like it.

A Weblog or Blog is a frequently updated online journal, organized by date and containing whatever the person that creates it wants to put down. Essentially, blogs are simple non-commercial personal websites. Among certain sets, the blog has become almost as popular as the ever-present instant messaging services as a communication tool. Whether used as an online diary, a forum for political rants, or simply for stream of consciousness commentary on day-to-day life, a blog is an easy (and now well-accepted) way of communicating your thoughts and feelings to the world.
Like any other site on the Internet, a weblog requires an IP address (like 64.221.45.110) and a DNS name (like WWW.myblog.isnotreallyhere.org) in order to be visitable online. This means that a blog site needs to be hosted on a web server like any other website.
The major difference between blogs and websites is that blogs are generally single pages only, the majority of which is text. This means that they take up very little space on a given web server, and also means that they are very easy to create and update.
This flexibility has led to a multitude of free blogging services offering both hosting (some with ads, some without) and software to let you easily update your blog without HTML skills. The first thing you should have in order to create your weblog is a plan of action. What are you going to write about? How often? Why would people read it, and do you care? This may seem kind of trivial now, but without such a plan, the chances of your blog lasting are next to none. Enthusiasm and focus are important here. HTML, which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. It provides a means to create structured documents by denoting structural semantics for text such as headings, paragraphs, lists etc as well as for links, quotes, and other items. It allows images and objects to be embedded and can be used to create interactive forms. It is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of “tags” surrounded by angle brackets within the web page content. It can include or can load scripts in languages such as JavaScript, which affect the behavior of HTML processors like Web browsers, and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to define the appearance and layout of text and other material. The W3C, maintainer of both HTML and CSS standards, encourages the use of CSS over explicit presentational markup.

Internet
the name given to the collective electronic network of computers and computer networks which are inter-connected throughout the world – started with the ARPAnet at the US Dept. of Defense.
USENET
the name given to the computer network which carries newsgroups – newsgroups are arranged in heirarchies based loosely on subject matter – the USENET is often confused with the INTERNET in the news media – started by two students at Duke University.
WorldWideWeb – WWW – W3
the name given to the collection of computers which serve information in hypertext format to the INTERNET – invented by Dr. Tim Berners-Lee, at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), who wrote the first hyper text transfer protocol daemon (HTTPD) and the first hyper text markup language (HTML) browser, as a way to allow nuclear physicists to exchange working papers over the computer networks.
HTTPD – Hyper-text Transfer Protocol Daemon
a computer program which manages the transfer of hyper-text and multimedia documents over the INTERNET.
HTML – Hyper Text Markup Language
the text markup language used to insert tags which allow a Web browser to correctly display a hyper-text document. HTML1, HTML +, HTML 2 and HTML 3 are versions of HTML in use at this time. HTML is a subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) first invented to display legal texts and now the world standard for large documentation projects.
VRML – Virtual Reality Modeling Language
a tagging language for conveying three dimensional information over the Internet using a VRML browser.

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP), serving billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies. The Internet carries a vast array of information resources and services, most notably the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail. In addition it supports popular services such as online chat, file transfer and file sharing, gaming, commerce, social networking, publishing, video on demand, and teleconferencing and telecommunications. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications allow person-to-person communication via voice and video.
The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s when the United States funded research projects of its military agencies to build robust, fault-tolerant and distributed computer networks.
